Program Description
The Everett Middle School parents, faculty and community members formed the Community on Patrol program. In response to a review of safety issues by the Safe School Action Group, parent volunteers are available on a daily basis to help supervise students during breaks and to deter non-students from entering the campus during the lunch hour. Parent volunteers act as the "eyes and ears" of the school, promoting campus safety by increased adult visibility and parent participation.
Community on Patrol volunteers wearing identifiable clothing and badges, work in pairs to patrol school entrances, student gyms, locker rooms, hallways, rest-rooms, yards inside the school grounds, and areas immediately outside the school property. Community on Patrol members work with teachers, administrators and security staff to ensure that students are in appropriate areas.
Volunteers are on campus at the beginning of the school day, between 11:30 and 1:30, and the dismissal time. They may work 4 to 10 hours per week and are required to attend a weekly one-hour supervision session with Everett staff. The supervision sessions are used to solve problems and provide support for the volunteers. Well received by students and staff alike, the Community on Patrol program has been an overwhelming success.
