To implement a Parents on Campus program review the daily log from the pilot program noting strengths and weaknesses. Revise as needed to increase chances for greater effectiveness. Work with the school administration to discuss and reach agreement on critical issues such as reporting requirements, compliance with district and union policies, liability and insurance. Secure an office or other space on campus as a Parents on Campus headquarters. An on-campus location allows for immediate communication with the administration, gives credibility to the program, and is convenient for the parent volunteers.
This type of program requires ongoing recruitment, screening and training of volunteers. Try to make the screening process as convenient as possible for potential volunteers. Let them know, right from the start that the required fingerprinting and background checks take time and may delay their starting with the program. Be sure to stay in touch with volunteers to keep their enthusiasm high. Publicize all program events and achievements. Maintaining a steady and consistent flow of
communication to the district, school and public is vital to the success of the program. The more people hear about the program, the more they are likely to become "parents on campus".
