Program Planning & Implementation
To work effectively, Parents on Campus needs support from the entire school community. Students, faculty, administration, and parents need to be aware of and included in the planning process. Ideally, the planning team will represent most of the diverse groups at the school site. To recruit planning members:
- Arrange a meeting with the principal and members of the faculty to discuss the creation of a Parents on Campus program. Ask for representatives to serve on a planning team.
- Attend meetings of the PTA, Booster Clubs, and other parent organizations, and recruit directly. Have a Parents on Campus table with sign-up sheets at Back-to-School night, Open House, or other parent events. Remember, this is a parent-driven program.
- Attend student government and other student organization meetings, seek the help of school counselors and home room teachers to recruit students to serve on the planning team.
- Use the phone to contact as many parents as possible. If your school has parent/community liaisons or a parent coordinator, ask them to help recruit planning team members.
Benefits of Parents on Campus Programs
- Safer Campus - The school campus is a safe place because students usually behave better when their parents are present.
- Innovative Approaches - Parent involvement in campus supervision empowers and encourages the school administration to develop progressive programs. A knowledgeable group of parents is created and can help to develop campus safety programs.
- Increased Emphasis on Safety - A Parents on Campus program can create momentum for seeking greater emphasis on school safety at the district level and throughout the community.
- Increased Parent Involvement - A Parents on Campus program "breaks the ice" especially at the secondary level by bringing parents to campus for a definite purpose at a specific time and place. Once parents become familiar with the campus, there is a greater chance that they will become involved in other activities.
- Positive Campus Morale - Campus morale is heightened because the Parents on Campus program visibly demonstrates to students that parents believe education is important.
