Volunteer Campus Supervision Program Model
Parents on Campus was established by a group of concerned parents at John F. Kennedy High School in the Sacramento City Unified School District in Sacramento, California. These parents were seeking ways to prevent violence and help school administrators create a safe and secure environment conducive to teaching and learning. Promoting campus safety through the stabilizing influence of a positive parent presence on campus every day, parents walk about the campus in pairs and help prevent inappropriate behavior.
Through this program, parents gain firsthand knowledge about high school today. Students see vivid proof that their safety and education are high priorities among all adults in their community. Since implementing Parents on Campus, the John F. Kennedy High School community has experienced positive changes in student attitudes and campus atmosphere, and has noted a reduction in school violence.
News of the success of Parents on Campus at Kennedy High spread quickly and other school communities in Sacramento wanted to learn more about the program. Encouraged by the positive results at Kennedy High, the San Juan Unified School District, also in Sacramento, California, has several schools operating customized versions of the Parents on Campus model. Like Kennedy High, they too have experienced notable changes in student attitudes and reductions in school violence on their campuses.
